How do you tin a spider for a stained glass lamp?

I am working on my first stained glass lampshade and I don't know how to tin the spider that it hangs from. Is there a trick to it? I can't solder it to the inside solder seam. What am I doing wrong?

Do you use the copper 'tape' to fix the glass? Or lead?
In either case, try to threat the spider as if it was a piece of glass. That way you can solder it into the lamp.
