Beach Found
I have found rock at the beach for the first time?
For as long as I've been going to the beach, i don't think i have ever found rocks there. I go to Mustang Island, off of Corpus Christi at least once ervy summer. This time I went, I found TONS of little rocks scattered with the bits of shells that you can find anywhere. Is there any reason for this? A few of the rocks looked like granite pieces you would find in the mountains, the others looked like sand stone, and one looked VERY weird... it was short, but very thin bumpy, kind of mangled looking, and looked like lead, but was WAY too light for it to be lead. Any help?
im not worried... jsut curious. i found it odd that i've nevr EVER found rocks before.
I know Mustang Island very well having worked on an honors degree in geology in that area. You may be seeing some pumice stone. It's light weight, tan in color, appears full of gas vesicles. Also you may have found some portions of mixed stones of gravel size used to steady the sea floor around and below oil platforms. The fact that the stones are small suggests they could have been moved shoreward for some distance, just as the sand is moved toward, and down the beach. The lightweight, lead-looking stone may be graphite that was a constituent of the gravel.
