Saws used for production design?
I have very little woodwork experience, being a student who focused mainly on lighting and props as far as theatre goes.
Can anyone explain to me the differences between the miter, jig, table and band saws? And what is a router? I don't mean to sound dumb...but like I said, I have minimal experience with saws.
And while on the subject, can someone clarify for me the differences between rip, cross, miter and bevel cuts? Rip cuts go with the grain, cross cuts go against it, and bevel cuts are at an angle, correct? And what about miter cuts???
Thanks!
For differences, Miter saws can be either manual or electric.
For example my dad has a manual miter box. It is an adjustable
Frame that has a special hand saw with a rigid back that runs in
a guide frame.
Used manly for Door molding & baseboard trim.
An electric jig saw, is a hand held tool used to cut curved shapes.
A table saw is more of a precision tool. It is capable of sawing/
ripping/ crosscutting/ and mitering.
Used for small parts to full sheets of plywood.
Band saws are primarily used like a Jig saw to cut curves.
They are normally stationary and the work is hand
held and fed through the blade.
A router is another hand held tool.
They normally operate at around 20,000 RPM, although my Sears
one has adjustable speeds.
There are numerous different BITS available.
Routers can be used to cut out pockets, make dado slots,
rabbit cuts, round over edges etc.
You can go to Sears and see most of these tools and get more
information on them.
There is not enough space here to tell you everything I know.
As for your last paragraph, you have it all correct.
Bevel cuts and miter cuts are pretty much the same thing.
Hope this helps.
