If you use one of the selection tools to "cut out" the image before pasting it on the background, then remember to set Feather to 1 pixel before you make the selection. It helps to zoom in really close and tidy up the edges before you put it on the background. Yes, it's a pain but it's a pain we all have to endure;-)

After you've pasted it, highlight its layer in the Layers Palette and zoom in and use the eraser tool or use a Layer Mask and clean up the edges. You can also select the image and use selection tools set on Subtract From Selection and Add to Selection to clean up the edges.

Once the parts of the image are merged together you can't clean up the edges without erasing some of the background. This is when you can zoom it and use the Blur Tool put it'll take a careful touch and, depending on how jagged the edges are, you'll most likely produce a halo effect around the image.
